Benedict Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976 in London, England to parents (and actors) Timothy Carlton (b. Timothy Carlton Congdon Cumberbatch) and Wanda Ventnam. He had an interest in painting as a child and attended Harrow Public School with and arts scholarship. While at Harrow, Cumberbatch also grew an interest in stage theater, later on studying drama at Victoria University of Manchester and graduated with an M.A. in Classical Acting.

Cumberbatch’s professional acting career started in 1998 with a role as Roche in the theater play Rat in the Skull. He also performed in several theater productions, television shows, and movie films before his 2014 breakout role as Steven Hawking in the television film Hawking. Since then, Cumberbatch has been known for his roles as Sherlock Holmes in the television series Sherlock. Most recently, Cumberbatch has been known for his role as Dr. Steven Strange in the Marvel Universe’s recent films.

Cumberbatch has also contributed to numerous radio productions and documentary narrations. He is married to Sophie Hunter and they have three sons. In between many charities and positive engagements, Cumberbatch has found time to continue his acting and is slated to be in more productions in the future.
