Benedict Cumberbatch has signed to narrate the feature documentary There’s A Hole In My Bucket, about Royd Tolkien, the great-grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The film follows Tolkien’s journey to complete a bucket list of 50 challenges created for him by his brother Mike who suffered from motor nerurone disease, known as ALS in the US, in 2015.

Unknown to Royd Tolkien, he had secretly compiled a bucket list to be delivered to his brother after his death.

The documentary follows Tolkien as he attempts to complete those 50 challenges in New Zealand – it is being directed by Robert Cavanah.

UK sales outfit Evolutionary Films will be market screening the title at the upcoming American Film Market in Los Angeles.

The film is being produced by James Fisher at Sky Limit Films, with Royd Tolkien.

“Benedict was previously aware of my brother, Mike, and his battle with this terrible disease; In 2014 I organised a charity screening of The Hobbit on behalf of my brother, and Benedict joined fellow cast members who kindly recorded greetings for that event,” explained Royd Tolkien.

The Weinstein Co. buyer Lantern Entertainment and 13 Films will distribute the Harvey Weinstein-tainted Thomas Edison biopic, as well as the unreleased horror film ‘Polaroid.’

13 Films has partnered with Lantern Entertainment, an affiliate of The Weinstein Co. buyer Lantern Capital Partners, to handle foreign distribution of the Harvey Weinstein-tainted historical epic The Current War.

The film, which focuses on the rivalry between electricity innovators Thomas Edison (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), was a casualty in last year’s fallout of the revelations about the disgraced movie mogul, who acted as producer on the project.

Lantern Capital Partners subsequently paid $289 million for what remained of TWC.

The partners will also handle the foreign distribution of the unreleased horror pic Polaroid after both titles were acquired through Lantern’s acquisition of assets of TWC. Current War also stars Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland, Katherine Waterston and Tuppence Middleton.

Initially due for release last November, Current War has gone without a domestic release date. The film, directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, first bowed at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

Polaroid, based on the award-winning short by Lars Klevberg and from the producers of the The Ring and The Grudge, centers on high school loner Bird Fitcher, who he has no idea what dark secrets are tied to the vintage Polaroid camera she stumbles upon.

13 Films is an international distribution and finance company founded by Tannaz Anisi and based in Los Angeles. Lantern is an affiliate of Lantern Capital Partners, a indie studio with a library of over 270 films, including The King’s Speech and The Artist. [Source]

Benedict Cumberbatch will star in a Brexit drama for Channel 4 from Tessa Ross and Juliette Howell’s House Productions.

The Doctor Strange actor, currently starring in the Showtime and Sky drama Patrick Melrose, will front Brexit (working title), a political thriller written by playwright James Graham, best known for political plays such as The Vote and the recent Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? play Quiz.

Cumberbatch will star as Dominic Cummings, the leading strategist and Campaign Director of Vote Leave.

The one-off drama will unpack the anatomy of the historic, high-stakes campaign to win the hearts and minds of the British people and will be directed by Black Mirror’s Toby Haynes.

It was commissioned by C4’s Head of Drama Beth Willis and is exec produced by Howell and Ross and produced by Lynn Horsford. It will begin shooting later this year.

Graham says: “I’m so excited — not to mention a little nervous — to have this chance to try and get under the skin of what happened during that historic vote. I hope by going behind-the-scenes of the campaign, we’re able to interrogate the consequences of what happened during these eight weeks that have changed the country forever. To work with this incredible team and Channel 4 to bring this story to life on screen is a real honor.”

Willis adds: “James’ whip smart, funny and insightful writing is a breath of fresh air. We are so thrilled that he and the genius that is Benedict Cumberbatch feel Channel 4 is the right home for it – Brexit is exactly the kind of explosive and illuminating drama we want to have on the channel.” [Source]

Benedict Cumberbatch is the first performer to sign up for the New York debut of London’s Letters Live, a stage show that pairs celebrities with actual “literary correspondence” from the likes of Mohandas Gandhi, David Bowie, Tom Hanks, Abraham Lincoln, Patti Smith and Janis Joplin.

Cumberbatch is the first star confirmed for the show’s New York debut engagement on May 18 and 19 at Manhattan’s Town Hall. Additional cast will be announced, though some surprises are planned for the shows.

Created and developed by independent publishing house Canongate, Letters Live is described as a “live celebration of the enduring power of literary correspondence. Each show always features a completely different array of great performers, reading remarkable letters written over the centuries and from around the world. One of the joys of Letters Live is that one never knows who is going to take to the stage or what letter they are going to bring alive.”

A portion of the proceeds from the two NYC shows will support literacy group 826NYC and Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Since its 2013 at the Tabernacle in London, Letters Live has included performances by Cumberbatch, Gillian Anderson, Ian McKellen, Kylie Minogue, Russell Brand, Thandie Newton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rose McGowan, Riz Ahmed, Juliet Stevenson, LeVar Burton, Mark Hamill, Anjelica Huston, Tom Hiddleston, Sally Hawkins, JJ Abrams, James Corden, Noma Dumezweni, Oscar Isaac, Mary J. Blige, Jude Law, Brie Larson, Nick Cave and Sir Ben Kingsley.

In addition to the missives from Bowie, Gandhi, Joplin, Hanks and Smith, letters read include ones written by Maya Angelou, Elvis Presley, Kurt Vonnegut, Charlotte Bronte, Katherine Hepburn, Richard Burton, James Baldwin and Che Guevara. [Source]
